Trades in the Eastern Suburbs
Sydney's Eastern Suburbs sit on the peninsula between Port Jackson and the Tasman Sea, and they fit an unusual range of housing into a few kilometres. Paddington and Woollahra are terrace country, with slate roofs, iron lace and tiny rear lanes. Bellevue Hill, Vaucluse and Rose Bay hold Federation and interwar houses built of face brick, render and terracotta tile, many on large blocks that fall toward the water. Darling Point, Double Bay, Point Piper and Bondi carry a heavy share of apartments, from 1920s walk-ups to harbourside towers. Dover Heights and the clifftops mix mid-century houses with new architect rebuilds in glass and concrete. Beneath almost all of it lies Hawkesbury sandstone, visible in garden walls, front steps, retaining walls and the sea walls along the harbour.
Salt sets the maintenance calendar. Harbour-facing homes from Darling Point out to Watsons Bay collect wind-borne salt and splash, while ocean-facing homes in Dover Heights, Bronte, Clovelly and Coogee take spray straight off the Tasman. It leaves a grey film on glass within weeks, corrodes gutter screws, balustrade fixings and door hardware, and draws a white bloom out of porous sandstone. Shade does the rest. South-facing walls, retaining walls under fig trees and the damp side of a steep block grow black mould, algae and lichen. Figs and gums around Cooper Park, Nielsen Park and Centennial Park drop leaf litter that fills gutters and stains paving brown. Ridge-top driveways run long and steep, and plenty of them were laid in coloured or exposed aggregate concrete that fades unless it is sealed.
Three councils share the region. Woollahra covers the harbour suburbs from Paddington to Watsons Bay, Waverley takes Bondi, Bronte and Dover Heights, and Randwick looks after Clovelly, Coogee and Randwick itself. All three run heritage conservation areas. Woollahra's list includes Paddington, the first conservation area declared in Australia, as well as smaller precincts in Bellevue Hill, Rose Bay and Vaucluse. Inside those areas, and on any listed house, external changes can require approval; ask council before committing to new fences, roofing or colours. Each council also protects trees above set sizes; in Woollahra the controls start at five metres of height or three metres of canopy. Where a home is in a strata scheme, work on common property such as facades, external windows and shared driveways needs owners corporation approval first.
TPS Trade Connect is a matching service, not a contractor. The quote form takes the details of the job, plus any photos you have, and from there it reaches vetted, independent tradies whose regular rounds include your suburb. They get in touch with you and put their quote in writing, under their own ABN, their own insurance and whatever licence the work demands. You weigh the quotes against each other and pick one, or pick none. Homeowners pay nothing, and nothing obliges you to hire. Jobs only go to tradies who have cleared our six checks, covering identity matched to an ABN, licensing, insurance, work history, conduct and ongoing feedback. Anyone who falls short is removed.

Frequently asked questions
Vaucluse, Point Piper, Bellevue Hill, Rose Bay, Double Bay, Darling Point, Woollahra, Paddington, Dover Heights, Watsons Bay, Bondi, Bronte, Coogee, Clovelly and Randwick each have their own page. If your street sits between two of them, post the job anyway and we will match it with tradies who already work nearby.
No. We find and vet independent tradies and match them with your job. Whichever tradie you choose runs a separate business and is responsible for quoting, contracting, insuring and doing the work, on their own ABN and, where the job needs it, their own licence. Your agreement is with them, and Australian Consumer Law guarantees apply to their work.
Six checks, in order: photo ID matched against an active ABN; any licence the work calls for, verified on the NSW public register; a current public liability certificate held on file; recent work in these suburbs backed by two references; a signed agreement to written quotes, Australian Consumer Law duties and a code of conduct covering punctuality, a clean site and no pressure selling; and homeowner feedback after every match, with removal for those who fall short.
Yes. Routine maintenance such as washing, window cleaning and gutter clearing is not usually a planning matter, but changing external materials, fences, roofing or colours may need approval from Woollahra, Waverley or Randwick council, and sandstone or heritage facades need low-pressure methods. Check with council before altering anything, and tell the tradie the property is in a conservation area when you post the job.
Anything on common property, which usually includes the facade, roof, external windows, balcony structure and shared driveways, needs the owners corporation's approval, normally arranged through the strata manager. Within the walls of your own lot, whether that is a kitchen-sink filter or a flat-pack wardrobe, the decision is generally yours, though by-laws may still set working hours and access rules.
There is no fee for homeowners. Once you post the job it is offered to vetted tradies on their rounds in your suburb; they get in touch, ask anything they need to know or arrange a visit, and each one sends a written quote direct to you. You compare the quotes and decide. Hiring is optional, and you can tell us how it went afterwards.
