Trades on the Northern Beaches
The Northern Beaches begin at North Head and Manly, take in the harbour suburbs of Fairlight, Balgowlah Heights, Clontarf and Seaforth, then follow the coast through Freshwater, Dee Why, Collaroy and Mona Vale to Newport, Avalon Beach, Whale Beach and Palm Beach. Inland, Terrey Hills and Duffys Forest sit on semi-rural blocks between Garigal National Park and Ku-ring-gai Chase. The housing is as varied as the ground. Manly is mostly apartments, from interwar blocks to post-war walk-ups and newer buildings by the wharf. Darley Road keeps Federation and Edwardian houses. The ridges hold mid-century brick and tile homes, many since extended or replaced by rendered rebuilds with glass balustrades, while the Pittwater beaches still have weatherboard and fibro cottages beside architect-designed houses.
Everything here is built on Hawkesbury sandstone and lives in sea air. Spray from the Pacific hazes glass within weeks, corrodes gutter fixings, light fittings and balustrade bolts, and leaves a white bloom on sandstone fences. The humid harbour side grows green algae and black mould on render, fibre cement and the shaded southern faces of houses. Norfolk Island pines on the beachfronts and angophoras and gums along the bush edges drop needles and leaves into gutters, stain paving with tannin and coat windows and solar panels with pollen. Steep blocks mean long driveways that grow moss on the shaded side, retaining walls that never fully dry and decks that turn grey in a season. Summer storms test every downpipe.
The whole region falls under Northern Beaches Council, formed in 2016 from the former Manly, Warringah and Pittwater councils, and their three local environmental plans still apply while a single plan is prepared. Manly has mapped heritage conservation areas around The Corso and Pittwater Road, and individually listed houses and gardens appear across the peninsula, so check with council before changing a listed exterior. Trees of five metres or taller generally need a council permit to remove or prune heavily, and council does not approve removal for views or leaf drop. Letting detergent, paint flakes or sediment reach a stormwater drain is an offence in NSW, and most drains here run straight to a beach, lagoon or the harbour. In apartment buildings, the owners corporation must approve work on common property.
Using the service is simple. Put the job into the quote form with your suburb, a few photos and anything a tradie should know about getting in, or ring 0494 810 609 between 7am and 6pm, Monday to Saturday. We pass it to vetted, independent tradies already working on the Beaches. Each of them has shown us photo ID that matches an active ABN, any licence their work calls for, a current public liability certificate and recent jobs with references, and each has signed up to written quotes and our code of conduct. Whoever takes your job gets in touch, looks it over and prices it for you in writing. You compare and decide. Homeowners are never charged, nobody has to hire, and we ask how it went after every match.

Frequently asked questions
Manly, Fairlight, Balgowlah Heights, Seaforth, Clontarf, Freshwater, Dee Why, Collaroy, Newport, Avalon Beach, Whale Beach, Palm Beach, Mona Vale, Terrey Hills and Duffys Forest each have their own pages. Tradies in the network often cover the streets between them as well, so if your suburb is not listed, post the job anyway or call and ask.
No. We are a matching service. The person who turns up is an independent tradie working under their own ABN, licence and insurance. They price the job, contract with you and carry out the work. Our part is checking them before they join the network, matching them to jobs in their area and collecting your feedback afterwards.
Six things, in order. Photo ID is matched to a live ABN. Where the work calls for a licence, we look it up on the NSW public register and confirm it covers that class of work. A current public liability certificate goes on file. The tradie shows us recent jobs in these suburbs and gives two references, or an equivalent record. They sign up to written quotes, their Australian Consumer Law obligations and our code of conduct: turn up when agreed, leave the site clean, no pressure selling. After every match we ask you how it went, and anyone who falls short is removed. None of this is a promise about the work itself; the contract and your consumer rights sit between you and the tradie.
Routine cleaning is maintenance and normally needs no approval, but if your home is in one of Manly's heritage conservation areas or is a listed item, ask Northern Beaches Council before anything that changes the exterior, and keep sandstone and heritage facades to low-pressure methods. Tree work is different: removing or hard-pruning a tree five metres or taller generally calls for a permit, and the council's own page rules out taking trees down for a view, for solar access or because of leaf drop.
Not down the street drain. NSW's Protection of the Environment Operations Act treats detergent, sediment or paint flakes entering stormwater as an offence, and on the Beaches those drains discharge to the ocean, the lagoons or the harbour. A vetted tradie captures the run-off or sends it onto a lawn or garden bed, and asks Sydney Water before putting anything into the sewer.
The service is free for homeowners. Once matched, the tradie contacts you, assesses the job from photos or a visit and quotes directly, in writing. You can compare quotes and choose, or hire no one. Residential building work worth over 5,000 dollars including GST needs, under NSW law, a licensed contractor and a contract in writing, and plumbing or electrical work is licensed whatever it costs.
