Gardening & lawns

The jobs

Gardening requests are mostly regular rounds, and the gardens are good ones. The deep blocks of Killara, Pymble, Wahroonga and Turramurra post fortnightly maintenance of established gardens with camellias, azaleas, big lawns and endless leaf litter. Harbourside Mosman, Darling Point and Vaucluse post terraced gardens on slopes with hedges that need a line kept. Coastal Collaroy, Newport and Whale Beach post salt-tolerant gardens on sand. Paddington and Bondi post courtyards and balcony planting. One-off clean-ups before sales and tenancies, hedge trimming of lilly pilly and murraya, lawn renovation and mulching all come through.

Gardening and lawn care are not licensed trades, so we verify identity against your ABN, sight your public liability policy, and look at gardens you maintain locally along with references from their owners. On the call we ask about plant knowledge and practice: mowing heights for buffalo and kikuyu, hedge trimming without cutting into bare wood, pruning timing, where green waste goes, herbicide use near drains and waterways, and power-tool noise hours. The rule we care most about is trees: know that council tree controls apply above set sizes, and tell homeowners to check with council rather than prune or remove a protected tree.

Homeowners here expect a garden to look better after every visit, not just shorter. They expect clean edges, hedges on a straight line, beds weeded and mulched, paths blown clear, green waste gone and gates shut behind you. They expect you to turn up on the agreed day, to say when a plant is struggling and to suggest the seasonal jobs before they have to ask. Regular clients in these suburbs stay for years with a gardener who is reliable, and they recommend them to the street. Our post-job feedback tends to confirm it.

What we check for this trade

Identity and ABN: We see photo identification and match it to an active Australian Business Number on ABN Lookup, confirming the trading name, entity type and that the ABN is current. This tells you the person quoting is who they say they are and is running a real business that can be held to account. Sole traders, partnerships and companies are all welcome; anonymous operators are not.
Licence check where the work needs one: In NSW, residential building work worth more than 5,000 dollars in labour and materials, including GST, needs a Building Commission NSW contractor licence, and plumbing, drainage, gasfitting, electrical and air conditioning work need one at any value. Most house washing, window cleaning, gardening, rubbish removal and small handyman jobs do not; water filter plumbing always does. Where a licence applies we check it on the NSW public register and confirm it covers the class of work.
Public liability insurance: Every tradie provides a current certificate of currency for public liability insurance, and we record the policy limit and expiry. A network minimum is being set. This cover is for damage or injury caused by the tradie's work; it is not a warranty on the quality of the job, which is covered by your contract and the Australian Consumer Law. We ask for the renewed certificate each year.
Work history: We ask for photos of recent jobs in these suburbs and two references we can call, or an equivalent track record for tradies new to the area with a history elsewhere. We are looking for work like the jobs homeowners post here, done to a standard, on the kinds of properties found in Vaucluse, Mosman or Avalon Beach. A new ABN with no history is not a bar, but it will be asked for more.
Conduct: Before listing, tradies agree in writing to quote in writing, to meet their obligations under the Australian Consumer Law, and to our code of conduct: turn up when you said you would, leave the site clean, no pressure selling. They also agree to the legal basics that come up in this work, such as keeping wash water out of stormwater, not disturbing asbestos and working safely at height.
Ongoing: Vetting does not stop at listing. After each match we ask the homeowner how it went: did the tradie turn up, was the quote honoured, was the work as described, was the site left tidy. We follow up complaints with the tradie, we check licences and insurance as they fall due for renewal, and tradies who fall short are removed from the network.

Frequently asked questions

No formal qualification is required for maintenance gardening. We check your ABN, insurance, local work and references and talk through your plant and lawn knowledge. If you hold horticulture qualifications, arborist qualifications or a chemical user certificate, tell us; they help with matching to larger or more particular gardens.

Hedges and small shrubs, yes. Pruning or removing mature trees is arborist work and usually needs a council permit above set sizes. We match that separately to qualified arborists with the right insurance. Please do not quote tree removal through a gardening match.

Mostly regular fortnightly or monthly rounds, with one-off clean-ups before sales, tenancies and events. You quote a per-visit price and agree the schedule directly with the homeowner. Say which you prefer when you apply.

Into the homeowner's green bin where it fits, otherwise to a licensed green waste facility, with the disposal shown in your quote. Dumping garden waste in bushland or reserves is illegal and spreads weeds, and it would end a place in the network.
