Handyman jobs on the Northern Beaches, North Shore and Eastern Suburbs

Lists of small jobs, mounting, assembly, door and window repairs and gutter guard, posted by homeowners who want one reliable person.

Handyman

The jobs

Handyman requests are the most varied on the site. Apartment owners in Bondi, Manly and Neutral Bay post television and artwork mounting and flat-pack assembly around moves. Terrace owners in Paddington and Woollahra post sash windows, old locks and doors that catch. Families in Turramurra, Lindfield and Bellevue Hill post a half day of accumulated repairs: shelving, patching, flyscreens, silicone, a loose post. Holiday-home owners at Palm Beach and Avalon post jobs to be done between visits. Gutter guard installation picks up every autumn under the gums of the North Shore and the peninsula.

Most handyman work sits under the 5,000-dollar licence threshold, so we check your ID against your ABN, your public liability certificate, photos of recent local jobs and two references, and we talk about where you draw the line. We want to hear that new power points, light fittings, taps and anything on a water or gas line go to a licensed electrician or plumber, that you know the difference between a repair and building work that needs a contractor licence, and that strata common property is off limits without approval. If you hold a contractor licence or trade qualification we check it on the NSW register and match you to the larger jobs it covers.

Homeowners want one person they can hand a list to. They expect a short written quote, by the job or by the hour with an honest estimate, the right fixings for the wall, dust sheets, holes patched, offcuts removed and a text when you are on the way. They expect you to say when something needs a licensed trade rather than have a go. They notice shoes at the door and tidy work around expensive finishes. Handymen who do the small things well in these suburbs become the person a street calls, and the feedback we collect after each job reflects that.

What we check for this trade

Identity and ABN: We see photo identification and match it to an active Australian Business Number on ABN Lookup, confirming the trading name, entity type and that the ABN is current. This tells you the person quoting is who they say they are and is running a real business that can be held to account. Sole traders, partnerships and companies are all welcome; anonymous operators are not.
Licence check where the work needs one: In NSW, residential building work worth more than 5,000 dollars in labour and materials, including GST, needs a Building Commission NSW contractor licence, and plumbing, drainage, gasfitting, electrical and air conditioning work need one at any value. Most house washing, window cleaning, gardening, rubbish removal and small handyman jobs do not; water filter plumbing always does. Where a licence applies we check it on the NSW public register and confirm it covers the class of work.
Public liability insurance: Every tradie provides a current certificate of currency for public liability insurance, and we record the policy limit and expiry. A network minimum is being set. This cover is for damage or injury caused by the tradie's work; it is not a warranty on the quality of the job, which is covered by your contract and the Australian Consumer Law. We ask for the renewed certificate each year.
Work history: We ask for photos of recent jobs in these suburbs and two references we can call, or an equivalent track record for tradies new to the area with a history elsewhere. We are looking for work like the jobs homeowners post here, done to a standard, on the kinds of properties found in Vaucluse, Mosman or Avalon Beach. A new ABN with no history is not a bar, but it will be asked for more.
Conduct: Before listing, tradies agree in writing to quote in writing, to meet their obligations under the Australian Consumer Law, and to our code of conduct: turn up when you said you would, leave the site clean, no pressure selling. They also agree to the legal basics that come up in this work, such as keeping wash water out of stormwater, not disturbing asbestos and working safely at height.
Ongoing: Vetting does not stop at listing. After each match we ask the homeowner how it went: did the tradie turn up, was the quote honoured, was the work as described, was the site left tidy. We follow up complaints with the tradie, we check licences and insurance as they fall due for renewal, and tradies who fall short are removed from the network.

Frequently asked questions

Not for jobs under 5,000 dollars in labour and materials that do not involve electrical, plumbing, gas or air conditioning work. Above that threshold you need a Building Commission NSW contractor licence for residential building work. If you hold a licence we match you to the larger jobs; if not, we keep your matches inside the threshold.

You tell the homeowner, do the parts you can, and the rest goes to a licensed electrician or plumber matched through the right category. Doing electrical or plumbing work without a licence, however minor, breaches the law and our code of conduct and ends a place in the network.

Yes. Nominate the services you offer from general handyman, furniture assembly, TV and picture mounting, door, lock and window repairs and gutter guard installation. Decline anything that does not fit when it arrives, and pause matches when you are busy.

Either a fixed price for the listed items or an hourly rate with a time estimate and a note on materials, in writing before you start. They are comparing you with others, so quotes that itemise what is included, name the fixings or parts, and give a date are the ones chosen.
